A bridge over the Oder River near Frankfurt (Oder) played an important role as early as the Middle Ages, both for Hanseatic merchants and pilgrims on the Way of St. James. The first solid bridge was built in 1895, at that time even with a tram track leading across to what was then Frankfurt's Dammvorstadt suburb.
The current Stadtbrücke city bridge dates from 2002. From bank to bank, it is just under two hundred and fifty metres (at normal water levels) and the bridge reaches a height of up to thirty-four metres. The border between Germany and Poland runs in the middle of the shipping lane. Therefore, approximately two-thirds of the bridge is on Polish territory. A visit to Słubice on the other side of the Oder is definitely worth a detour.
